In an effort to bolster literacy among students, Cardinal is implementing two distinct intervention programs aimed at addressing varying levels of reading needs: Tier 2 Intervention through the mCLASS Intervention program and Tier 3 Intervention via the UFLI Foundations program.
The mCLASS Intervention program is a vital component of the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) literacy curriculum, which is being implemented for the first time this year at Cardinal Elementary.
The Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum for students in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade is designed to build a strong foundation in literacy through a comprehensive and engaging approach. This curriculum emphasizes the integration of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, ensuring that students develop a well-rounded literacy experience. In the early grades, CKLA focuses on phonics, enabling students to decode words effectively, while also enhancing their vocabulary and comprehension skills through rich and diverse texts. The curriculum incorporates a variety of thematic units that explore different subjects, allowing students to make connections across disciplines and engage with the material in meaningful ways. Through hands-on activities, storytelling, and collaborative learning, CKLA fosters a love for reading and lays the groundwork for future academic success.
The Tier 2 intervention, mCLASS, groups students based on their specific instructional needs, allowing for tailored teaching strategies. Every two weeks, educators assess students’ progress, focusing on essential reading skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. These assessments not only gauge students' abilities but also inform teachers on how to modify instruction to better support individual learning paths.
For students requiring more intensive support, the UFLI Foundations program offers an advanced level of intervention. This program is designed for those who need additional assistance beyond what is provided in Tier 2. UFLI Foundations emphasizes comprehensive and individualized instruction, concentrating on key foundational reading skills, including phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, and the reading and spelling of irregular and high-frequency words.
By implementing these two tiers of intervention, local schools aim to close literacy gaps and ensure that every child receives the appropriate level of support to succeed in their reading journey. Educators encourage parents to stay engaged with their child’s progress and reach out with any questions or concerns, fostering a partnership that enhances students' literacy development.
