Virtual Learning Information

Dear Maquoketa CSD Families,

With the feedback many families provided from our virtual learning day survey along with staff feedback, a district committee has been working on creating a virtual learning plan to use for inclement weather days once we have used our “extra” hours within our calendar and after adding one in-person day to the end of the school year. This means that if we get to a point where we are not meeting our 1,080 required school hours (four total snow days or a combination of full snow days and early outs/late starts), we will begin using virtual learning days. Following, Friday, January 12th, we will have the ability to have one more snow day and then we will transition to virtual learning. We will continue to gather feedback if we do use a virtual day so we can keep improving this process and support all students. The information in the tables below outline the general guidelines for these days.

Learning focused on enrichment or review Assignments/learning provided through a paper packet. Packets will be sent home before snow days so the activities will be able to be applied to a variety of content (ex. Write spelling words for the week, read a story and write/draw a picture about what you read. Teachers will provide options of “must dos” and “may dos” “Must Dos” will be designated by classroom teachers. “May Dos” will come from specials teachers (art, music, P.E.)	The “Must Do” assignments need to be turned in for students to be counted present for the virtual day (unless there are extenuating circumstances such as illness or the student was already planning to be absent).	Teachers will respond to any emails or messages in “Rooms” that a student or parent sends in the morning by 11:30 am and any emails or “Rooms” messages sent by a student or parent in the afternoon by 3:00 pm.

Learning focused on enrichment or review Students will watch an instructional video or typed lessons on Canvas (video and lesson should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete) It’s expected that lessons will be on Canvas for all courses including elective courses.	The assignment/exit ticket for the lesson needs to be completed on Canvas or turned in the day following the virtual day for students to be counted present (unless there are extenuating circumstances such as illness or the student was already planning to be absent).	Teachers will respond to any emails or messages in “Rooms” that a student or parent sends in the morning by 11:30 am and any emails or “Rooms” messages sent by a student or parent in the afternoon by 3:00 pm.

*Communicate with teachers via email or through Rooms. Rooms is available through our Maquoketa CSD app. You are able to “text” the teachers through Rooms as well as receive any announcements teachers share with families. Directions to access Rooms is available on the homepage of our website.

* There will not be a specific time that students need to log-in or join a Zoom lesson. All assignments/lessons may be completed at the time that’s most convenient for your student/family.
