During the recent Fire Prevention Week, the Preschool, Transitional Kindergarten (TK), and Kindergarten classes from Cardinal had the opportunity to visit the fire station. This experience was designed to educate and engage the students, ensuring they feel empowered and unafraid in the event of a fire emergency.
The firefighters addressed the students' potential fears, emphasizing that they are there to help, not to be feared. They conducted a demonstration, showcasing the full firefighter uniform and explaining the purpose of each protective element. The firefighters also spoke to the students while wearing their masks, allowing the children to hear that their voices may sound different but they are there to provide assistance. Next the students practiced getting "low" to crawl out of a simulated smoky environment.
The students were then treated to a tour of the fire station, and got to see the fire trucks and more equipment. Of course the best part was when the students were given the opportunity to ride back to school on the fire trucks, complete with the thrilling sound of sirens.
Each student left the fire station with a packet of information to share with their families, as well as a coloring book, stickers, pencils, and their very own fire hats.
A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated members of the Maquoketa Fire Department for providing this invaluable service and creating a lasting impression on our young learners.
